I don't know if it is real workaround but if you want to avoid running X
as root you can

1. Go to one of tty1-tty6 and login as a normal user
2. run the server in the same tty you logged in, e.g. for tty6: 

xinit /usr/bin/openbox -- :1 vt6

Tested on ubuntu mate 16.04.
