I've recreated the situation described in the bug description by installing a virtual machine with Ubuntu Gnome 14.04.2 and using 'hwe- support-status --show-replacements' to determine packages to upgrade I ended up with a system that booted without X. The file /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log seems to contain information about the problem.
