I have tried the following mainline kernels and they don't seem to have made 
any difference

v4.7-rc5-yakkety/
v4.4.4-wily/

Running with nomodeset allows the GUI to show up in 800x600 but doesn't
allow any resolution change.

Output of xrandr --listproviders just says "Can't open display "
