Hey, I'm running Xubuntu 16.04 64-bit on an older HP Compaq dc7900 computer with a Core 2 Duo E6500 2.33GHz Processor and the Intel Q45 Graphics chipset and I am encountering the same problem. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 rectifies the problem.
