I have the same problem after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS. My laptop is Thinkpad W530, the graphics card is Nvidia K1000. I use two monitors and the the screen freezes from time to time when I running Chrome. I can move the mouse, but everything else freezes.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work for me.
