seems like the issue is most definitely the version of intel graphics
driver ubuntu is using.  Some people have "fixed" this by changing to
the pure intel graphics driver.

Like others, I noticed that using unity-tweak-tool and changing the text
scaling factor from 1.0 to 1.15 together within (in firefox) increasing
the font size via ctrl+ mouse scroll up fixed these issues in Unity.
