ok, downloaded kubuntu utopic, booted it, the live desktop showed for one half second, more or less, i tried to switch to vt2, no apparent response (similar to OP behavior), tried vt3, after several seconds it switched, i installed the same 2packages as above, and entered the same apport- command, it said "...Use your browser to authorize...Waiting to hear from Launchpad...", i started entering the mongo URL into my phone's firefox, meanwhile xorg was relaunched into a screen prompting for a password, i reswitched to vt3, continued entering the long URL, approved the access, meanwhile the vt3 screen says "ERROR: connecting to Launchpad failed: EOF occurred in violation of protocol (_ssl.c:581) You can reset the credentials by removing the file "/home/kubuntu/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials", but i found no such file. i reissued the apport- command, it said "...Use your browser to authorize...Waiting to hear from Launchpad...", i typed in another nasty URL, this time it said "*** Collecting problem information...............Do you want to include these logs...", i said yes, and yes including git bisection (tho the last time i tried, neither finding nor following the build instructions proved accomplishable within several hours, after which life presented other things needing attention..). but, due to xorg being relaunched into the screen asking for a password, i wonder whether the collected information captured anything useful.
