I was experiencing something very similar to this and stumbled across https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1376494 which suggested installing ibus-gtk.
1. sudo apt-get install ibus-gtk 2. reboot Now my gedit seems to work fine.
