I have the same issue: Ubuntu 14.10 Linux Spinky 3.16.0-24-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 28 13:07:32 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
xserver-xorg-video-intel: Installed: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4 Candidate: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.1 Version table: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.1 0 500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic-updates/main amd64 Packages *** 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4 0 500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status I have the felling this happens more often when unplugging an external display while in sleep. Switching to a VT and killing compiz (killall -9 compiz), and restarting unity (unity --replace) sometimes works, but most often I have to restart the lightdm service to get it going again.... I'd be happy to provide any logfiles.
