trying the patch by Sean now (reverted the previous patch). so far so good. using the xfce4-settings-4.11.2 code base b.t.w. my setup is a ubuntu trusty machine using latest nVidia drivers (337.25-0ubuntu1~xedgers14.04.2) connected via HDMI to an Onkyo receiver which is then connected to an Epson projector.
