Will the above workarounds allow me to use my external monitor again? My
monitor is connected via VGA. I had the same symptoms as the OP, and I
tried the suggestions above and I can now log in but I can no longer
detect my external monitor. In what order should I: purge Nvidia, purge
Nvidia-prime/Nvidia-settings, install the Ubuntu-commons/Nvidia-commons
.deb files, re-install Nvidia-prime, re-install Nvidia drivers?

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 with a ThinkPad W520, and Nvidia Prime.

I'm not sure if this is the right location for my question, but I have a
post [here](http://askubuntu.com/questions/521354/multiple-monitors-and-
nvidia-optimus-not-working-after-apt-get-update). Any suggestions are
welcome.
