This also affects me on a Thinkpad T61 with an "Intel Corporation Mobile
GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller" and Trusty, so it does not
seem to be Nvidia specific. As Dieter wrote, the brightness keys *do*
work before hibernate and continue to work if switching to a terminal
with e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1.
