I was able to resolve this with the following steps on a Dell Lattitude E6440 (Radeon HD 8670a): I did a full update (sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) and installed Gnome (sudo apt-get install gnome), selecting GDM as the display manager.
It occasionally gets stuck on a reboot but other than that it works great.
