I'm not sure if this is being worked on for the Unity desktop in Ubuntu, but you might like to try the Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" beta 1 which is based on GNOME 3.10 - see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/Beta1/UbuntuGNOME for info and download links. As per https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.10 /more-core-ux.html.en GNOME 3.10 includes High-Resolution Display Support. Further improvements are coming to the GNOME Shell in GNOME 3.12 which is scheduled for release in March or early April - see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTYwMjE
