Hi Christopher,The computer where I have this trouble is my primary office 
workstation that I need to remain quite stable, which is why it's running 12.04 
LTS.  Perhaps at the end of the spring semester (early May) I'll update the OS 
to the newest development release, but I unfortunately don't have the time to 
do this mid-year.  That said, the problem occurs frequently, though it seem to 
only occur when I'm using evince.  I've coped by using eog and okular instead, 
which don't seem to cause any trouble.
Thanks for following up, though, and I'm sorry that I cannot help out at this
