The default install of Ubuntu 13.10 seems to have this problem for me on an old Dell Optiplex 740 with built-in GeForce 6150 LE. The system seemed unstable. Leaving it on overnight, the display was dead (although ctl-alt-f1 was able to take me to the console); after rebooting, it failed to configure and build wine (!). Installing the proprietary Nvidia seems to help; building wine now succeeds, and there are no warnings in syslog. So, at least on this old nvidia hardware, xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.9-2ubuntu1 does not seem production-ready for even light use. I'm ok with the proprietary driver, but it would be nice to run untainted someday. ** Attachment added: "syslog.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1072403/+attachment/3935177/+files/syslog.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072403 Title: [GeForce 8600M GT] Unity and GnomeShell hang or crash with nouveau kernel error messages "fail ttm_validate", "validate vram_list" and "validate: -12" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1072403/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
