Are you referring to the physical connection? If so, I doubt that is it. Nothing about the physical port changed when I upgraded from 11.04 to 12.04. However, just like you, I did not see the problem on 11.04. I was definitely using the external monitor on 11.04. BTW, I am still getting both screens black. One of your posts said that you were now getting a frozen image, but no longer switching to black.
