Erm, disregard all that, like N hours later I discovered that the display's power button and reconnecting the DP cable weren't enough-- finally unplugged the whole display from wall power, in desperation, and it came back online just fine. Must've been a false correlation with the upgrade, or just some transient screwed-up state in the display's circuitry triggered by a reboot. Sorry!
