Dave, On the clean install:- 1) From the desktop, no Unity / task bar, ctrl/alt/f1 to login and install gnome-panel & synaptic. Would not let me install fglrx as "part of another package" 2) Restarted lightdm in gnome-panel. 3) Using synaptic, installed all updates, which included a refresh of ubuntu-drivers-common, which include fglrx and a newer kernal. Also installed the packages I commonly use from the repository 4) Rebooted into ubuntu - no unity / taskbar 5) Using synaptic, re-installed fglrx, installed linux-headers-generic. Using software-control, installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Reguired update of software sources to do this. Still no unity / task bar
