Dell XPS M1710 Laptop WITH Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX Fresh install 12.10 I only had what was automatically installed with Ubuntu after looking at my older installation I realized that some drivers were not installed and some could not be installed due to missing xorg But I was able to installed Nvidia common and after restarting I finally had brightness maybe you might want to make sure that Nvidia common as well as Current are installed it might do the trick but I still do not have display resolution setting
