workaround of i915.modeset is effective, but disable gnome-shell and 3D acceleration
when it happens, I lose even the virtual console (ctrl + F1, Ctrl + F2, etc ...), so it is impossible to work on computers. To avoid the hardware reset I have to log in and issue the command to reboot without seeing. I might try to login via ssh from another machine, but once you do not know what to watch.
