Rich, does this mean you can't use Unity for a desktop? I have had a similar problem, but I get a lockup using Firefox or Chrome browser, but I am not sure it is even that. I can make it lockup by just moving the scroll bar in any windows. Then again I try to lock it up and it won't lock. Sometimes it will lock a couple of times a day, then it goes for days without locking up. I have read the syslog and it really does not tell me anything. It is always different. It seems to be a kernel thing. even when it lock (and I can't get anything to respond to keyboard or mouse clicks, it will go to a prompt when I hit the Ctrl/Alt F2, from there I can run sudo shutdown now, and it will shut down. This gets me away from just hitting the power button and corrupting some files. It seems in the graphic mode I can't do anything but at the prompt I can. I installed a new SSD 180gig, reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 and it still lockup. But it ran about three days before it did. I am using a Dell Inspiron 1521 with the AMD 64bit. Running Ubuntu 64bit version. I do not have a nvidia graphics card.
