Same here, nvidia card+nouveau driver. I can reproduce the error with:
xrandr --output VGA-1 --above LVDS-1 most other xrandr commands work. (I have HDMI port here but it is not used at the moment, only laptop screen + external VGA) xrandr hangs, I can still ssh into the machine. I'm using Xfce 4.10. I remember spuriously seeing similar behavior (black screen) in Ubuntu 11.10 but it was going away after reboot.
