I also had very bad tearing issues in videos using a GeForce 320M on my
Macbook Air. Coment #60 fixed this issue for me too. On my desktop
machine I have a GeForce 560 Ti which does not require that setting.
Until now it has always been sufficient to adjust the sync settings in
nvidia-settings and compiz, but it did not work on the 320M.

Setting "Force full screen redrews (buffer swap) on repaint" should
definitely be considered a workaround and not a solution, since I read
on the ubuntuusers.de-wiki that it requires more powerful hardware. So I
guess on a laptop it might have negative effects on battery life.
