I also had a split screen in my Dell Inspiron 8000 when installed Ubuntu
11.10 Oneiric. After a lot of net reading and experimentation, I found
the following simple solution. I created a new xorg.conf file in the
directory /etc/X11. The file contains only the following lines
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
As some other posts indicated, you have to change the graphic card
driver. However, it was difficult to figure out how to do it correctly
in the new Ubuntu that originally has no xorg.conf file.
