I believe I have the same problem with an Acer 5755G laptop (nVidia 540m) and Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. After a fresh install I get:
$ glxgears Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual $ glxinfo name of display: :0 Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". (this line 5 times) Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". (this line 7 more times) When I run NVIDIA X Server Settings it tells me: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. After I run sudo nvidia-xconfig and reboot X won't start anymore. I have tried both nvidia-current 280.13-0ubuntu6 and the latest available from nVidia website. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660596 Title: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/660596/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
