"I updated to nvidia 185.18.31. Now I have no desktop at all." It is possible that you are running into a known problem with 185.18.29 and 185.18.31. Neither works for me, either. You might try 190.18.03 from the nVidia PPA (https://launchpad.net/~nvidia-vdpau/+archive/ppa), and see if that works for you. It does for me.
