I seem to have inadvertently narrowed down the cause of my bug. The problem is with Unity, not the synaptic driver. I installed a clean and updated copy of 11.10 and still have the same touchpad malfunction with Unity. The touchpad malfunction DOES NOT happen under GNOME 3. I've logged several hours of touchpad usage with GNOME 3 without incident. If I switch back to Unity, it takes only a few minutes for me to lose control of the system and end up forcibly restarting from another tty.
