I just saw a driver update for nvidia linux driver (290.10) which says in the 
releasenotes:

- Fixed a regression that caused blank/white windows when exhausting
video memory on GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs while using composited
desktops.

I will try it as soon as it hits the repos... Anyone else tried it
allready?
