Bryce, as I said in the second comment, please close this bug (I can't find any way to close it myself).
The slowdown was caused by Zeitgeist, but it seems that this behavior is much improved in Oneiric (although not completely gone yet), so for now I am ok to wait a few seconds after logging in for the Desktop to appear.
