notify-osd causes issues with full-screen applications on NVIDIA hardware hardware, as well, with Compiz running. For example, Firefox, Vendetta-online, or even a GNOME-Terminal fullscreen, will flicker badly (at least on my system). This doesn't seem to be isolated to just a video driver.
