Hi, just to confirm that method mentioned in post #12 works and solved the issue.
Toshiba L40, Ubuntu 11.04 with clean install. Graphics: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. Anyway perhaps it helps to find the root cause: Issue only happened when there was open window on my desktop.
