I have this exact problem. I am using a GeForce 7300 LE. This seems to affect a lot of laptop users, but I have the desktop version of this card.
The unity_support_test passes completely, but the desktop hangs if I load either Unity or Classic Gnome with Effects. I had no video problems on multiple prior releases, but discover then which I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. There are no errors in Xorg.0.log or anywhere else that I can find. What information can I provide that would be helpful for debugging? billh@billh1:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 7300 LE/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 270.41.06 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity supported: yes billh@billh1:~$ lspci | grep nVidia 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72 [GeForce 7300 LE] (rev a1) billh@billh1:~$ jockey-text -l xorg:nvidia_173 - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/726496 Title: Cannot use Unity or Classic desktop with effects after the latest nvidia+xorg update _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
