I have the same problem. Running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) with the "ubuntu-classic" desktop (gnome) and the nouveau driver.
I also installed the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (1:0.0.16+git20110323.8378443b-0ubuntu0sarvatt) from the x-edgers ppa but the Screen still crashes (Image is frozen but cursor still follows mouse movements). I have to reboot the machine.
