** Description changed: On Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. Sometimes, when I try to login, the login box disappears and the usplash (I think) starts as usual (with the scrolling bar). Within two or three seconds, the screen goes black, I get some errors, then the login screen again. I often have to make two or three attempts to finally get a successful login. Conditions: The default screen resolution is 1152 x 864; 75Hz. If I change the refresh rate to 60Hz then I am often unable to login. The screen flashes black (like it is supposed to when changing the resolution), and then a black error screen is seen. After this usplash continues, except not to log me in, but to go to gdm). This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I do not know whether I have a graphics card (I seriously doubt it, because I am unable to use Desktop Effects). I am willing to submit any other data that is required. Reproducible: Not always. Since I am able to login after a couple of attempts. Even when the screen resolutions (of my account to gdm) are not equal, I rarely am able to login in my first attempt. Other info: - I have not been able to note the error messages down as yet. - Yes, I am sure I typed in my password correctly. If I don't, I am not allowed to get to the point where usplash starts scrolling a bar on the screen. - This happens after around the bar completes one full scroll, sometimes two. FYI, for the whole login process, Ubuntu consistently takes 14 or 15 scrolls or scrolling cycles (whatever you call it). - I have never tried it with a different screen resolution (e.g 1024*768) --- Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID 062a:0000 Creative Labs Optical mouse Bus 001 Device 003: ID 051d:0002 American Power Conversion Uninterruptible Power Supply Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5 PackageArchitecture: i386 ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root=UUID=0b404b62-c9e0-476d-b6f1-ff1338048e60 ro quiet splash ProcEnviron: LANG=en_IN SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Tags: lucid lucid Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic i686 UserGroups: adm admin audio cdrom dialout dip fax floppy fuse lpadmin netdev plugdev sambashare tape video dmi.bios.date: 07/17/2001 dmi.bios.vendor: Award Software International, Inc. dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG dmi.board.name: i815E-ITE8870 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAwardSoftwareInternational,Inc.:bvr6.00PG:bd07/17/2001:svn:pn:pvr:rvn:rni815E-ITE8870:rvr:cvn:ct3:cvr: glxinfo: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory system: distro: Ubuntu codename: lucid architecture: i686 kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic + + + [lspci] + 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82815 Chipset Graphics Controller (CGC) [8086:1132] (rev 04) + Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82815 Chipset Graphics Controller (CGC) [8086:1132]
