I am also affected by this problem. After the boot splash, sometimes the screens turns black and stays this way, no switching to TTYs is possible. Rebooting via powerbutton is possible. Most of the time this bug does not happen but only sometimes.
Freshly installed Ubuntu 10.10 with no modifications (related to the boot process) on a Thinkpad X300.
