I just tried to reinstall Natty, using alternative cd using 32 bit installation instead, and still had the same problem. Managed to get into Natty adding nomodeset and then updating using sudo apt-add- repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa. Updated using sudo apt-get update, apt- get upgrade and apt-get dist upgrade, and still no backlight.
