ok just booted with the vanilla kernel using "radeon.modeset=0" tried
suspend and it failed to resume.

So it doesn't seem to be KMS.

What did I enable in my custom kernel that makes suspend work (but also
causes me to lose compositing).

Incidentally, using the custom kernel I get much better performance
with, for instance, youtube videos. I can play 720p clips stutter free
no problems. I can't even do that in XP/Vista/7!! Again whether this is
some radeon option I've enabled I have no idea.
