Thanks again, yes, please do close this. The MGA drivers have always been a problem under Linux (Suse and Ubuntu since 8.10 at least) and so to simplify things I use the Vesa driver, my multimedia demands being limited. With the live-CD from 10.04 I would get a blank screen and then used -xforcevesa so I could install. I should probably replace the MGA graphic card anyway, their Linux support doesn't appear to be all that good.
