I have a similar problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a AMD Athlon X2 64 4800 with ATI HD2600XT and 2GB RAM. Today I wanted to upgrade my RAM to 4GB. After I've installed the new RAM the locks up after the Ubuntu loading screen. If I remove any memory chip the PC boots ok. Also if I boot in Xfailsafe mode every thing is ok. So I did some searching and there are quite a few people having this problem. It's something related to video memory overlapping the high memory around the 4GB margin (if I remember correctly)
