More with D945GCLF2: The default resolution chosen by the driver was 1152x864.
Other resolutions work with mirror setup as well, but trying to turn mirror off 
with 1024x768 exhibited slightly different behaviour: the screens went blank 
for a moment, then returned (mirrored) with error: 

"Could not apply the selected configuration
Did not receive reply. Possible causes..."

Xorg.0.log is rather big after that, but I'll attach it anyway.
And here's xrandr output (the monitor connected to VGA is actually 1280x1024):
