Sorry for not adding this info up front: I now realize that because of an other problem with the driver (flickering cursor, #320771), I am running xserver-xorg-video- radeon_6.12.99+git20090625.96581746-0ubuntu0tormod_i386 and xserver- xorg-video-ati_6.12.99+git20090625.96581746-0ubuntu0tormod_i386 instead of the released versions (as per instructions in that other bug report).
Anyway, here's my Xorg.0.log too.
