After installing the version 0.5.32 of usplash (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/0.5.32/+changelog - "Run usplash at the native resolution if KMS is available"), I can boot with the option "splash".
But then, no gdm. I cannot switch to a VT. The computer is dead. Magic keys do not work. I could only hard reboot.
