Here's some more information: This had nothing to do with OpenOffice. After deinstalling OO, the problem was still there. So I started looking for a hardware problem. I use a IOGEAR 2-port KVM cable to connect two computers to my keyboard, etc. I was using a USB mouse with a ps/2 adapter to attach the mouse to the KVM cable. Somewhere in this cable mess is an instability, at least with this particular computer. When I connected the USB mouse directly to a USB port on the XUBUNTU computer, everything worked fine.
