I think it's safe to say that certain projects are pretty much dead. Just as the Mozilla phone kind of fizzled out, I think Touch is pretty much dead in the water. That makes Mir kind of useless, too. Which is good, because all flavors can benefit from Wayland. That's certainly the blessing we receive here.
That said, Unity itself may live on but so many people don't like it, I can't imagine it would really go anywhere. Eventually we'll have LXQt working happily thanks to Lubuntu's help. Upstream's been running it with Kwin instead of Openbox, so there's certainly a mid-weight desktop environment possible. Maybe someone should start the Ubuntu Qt flavor? :)
