Hey Joe and Lyz, I think I might be able to help you with a few things here, and sorry for not posting earlier on this: An Ubuntu hour would be a good for sure in Merced. We need more away from the bay and socal.
However I believe there is still people in the Central Valley Linux Enthusiast group! Here is a link to their site, http://cvale.org/about.php However if you do not mind a little drive and the CVLE is not something that works for you, there is another option as well. Fresno does have a lug that seems pretty cool from the people I have met with who have been there. Here is a link to their last event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1657488411186103/ and thats about an hours drive so that is a trek for some, but for open source it might be worth it! Either way you are not out on the dark in Merced at all. I think that there is a lot of work that can be done Ubuntu wise outside of te bay, but Linux users groups are there and well worth going to.
