At the command line terminal window, login using your
username/password. Then once you get logged in, issue
this command:-
sudo dpkg --configure -a
(that's sudo space dpkg space dash dash configure space
dash lower-case-a).
It should start chugging away continuing the upgrade. If
it just ends
immediately with no output then the upgrade may have
finished, but
something is missing. In that event, assuming you use
Ubuntu (with
Unity) desktop I would issue:-
sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop^
(sudo space apt space install space ubuntu dash desktop
caret) (the
caret is important).
If that does indeed install more stuff then that may be
sufficient to
have 'fixed' it.
If the first command (the dpkg one) *did* produce a
chunk of output -
like telling you it's installing / upgrading packages,
then it may not
be necessary to run the second command.
If you have run the above process, then I'd restart
"sudo reboot"
(sudo space reboot), and see if it is fixed.

Some progress, used both patches, now get a 14.04 screen but
without folders so am not sure just where it is now.
message box, "System program problem detected" "Do you
want to report the problem now" (I did )
Any more suggestions anybody, please, I get grub, not the normal
command line so cant force an update ?

I did a successful 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade yesterday. if, when you
get to the GRUB menu, you choose 'Advanced options for Ubuntu', you
can see which kernels you have installed. You will have 4.4, 3.13
and 3.11 if all has gone well. Have you got 4.4.0-31?

One thing I did not say, the Ubuntu page shows 14.04 and nothing
else except the backdrop, I have never used grub (knowingly) so was
worried about causing more problems..........will try your
suggestion and report back.

Only kerrnel I can find is 311, looks like I might have disturbed a
long pause, messing up everything. I'm expecting a 14.04, DVD Rom in
the next day or two, can try to repair what I have already.Will keep
the thread open, closing when resolved.

I finally used 12.04 and 14.04....this time being careful to let it
run witout interruption. Using the same process, have loaded 16.04 on
another computer. Thanks for suggestions, thread closed.
