For what it is worth, I bought a Del XPS13 developer edition laptop with Ubuntu
12.04 pre-installed last November. At the time, I chose to deal with a member
of the sales team as my education discount did not appear to be available via
the online purchase channel.

I was invited by Ubuntu to upgrade to 14.04 (LTS) which I accepted although it
retained the Dell proprietary drivers for the Bluetooth and WiFi chip (Intel
7260). I ran the machine using a “try-before-you-buy” installation of 14.04
from a USB drive which used the Ubuntu (non-proprietary) drivers embedded in
the kernel. Since this worked fine, I did a fresh install of 14.04 which I have
since upgraded to 14.10.

This appears to work exceedingly well although there is a minor issue with it
dropping the connection to the built-in audio from time to time.

The quad i7 processor works very well especially with the FlightGear flight
simulator where the scene rendering tasks are shared amongst all the processors
(once enabled). This is evident from the System Performance app.

I am comparing its performance with that of an Apple MacBook Pro using the
Intel i7 processor. IMHO the Apple is a far better machine in all respects and
runs the free and open source software (FOSS) apps such as Firefox,
LibreOffice, GIMP, MuseScore and FlightGear just as well as on the Dell.
However, the Apple is about twice the price but does come with some of Apple’s
proprietary software such as iTunes and integrates perfectly with my iPhone.
