I *think* disabling that will mean that you will not get files listed in the Recently Used section of the dash. There is a bug open for the Dash being slow to find files [1]. For me it gets slow after a while and every few weeks I go into ~/.local/share/zeitgeist and delete all the contents. That loses the search history but it runs faster for some time. This is a different problem to that which the OP has though as he is reporting that it is not indexing files at all.
