I had it in legacy mode and still had the problem. At the suggestion on the pcspecialist forum, I tried the nomodeset boot option and it boots 13.04. I have to install and sort the graphics drivers. Bedtime. I'll work on it tomorrow. Thanks guys for all your suggestions.
